Freddie Prinze Jr. Previews His Return to Bones, Admits He's Never Watched Buffy (but Weighs in on Angel vs. Spike)

Though he's married to Buffy herself, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Prinze, who makes his return to Fox's Bones in tonight's episode, admitted to E! News that he's only seen one episode of the beloved cult hit. "Oh, you can judge. That's fine, I don't care," he said after we shamed him for missing out on Joss Whedon's masterpiece. "It wasn't written for my demographic, so I never saw it."

Hmm that just seems super-dismissive of his wife's work to me, like he assumes that it was only aimed at an audience of young girls and couldn't possible have mass appeal! Sarah should have tied him down and forced him to watch some of her best episodes like The Body and Hush. Even if he wasn't interested in the the show itself, you'd think that he would have wanted to catch a few episodes to see Sarah at least, although I suppose I don't know if it's a thing that actors like to watch their partners work or not *g*

So how did the guest appearance come to fruitition? On vacation, when he happened to bump into Boreanaz, an on-going occurrence for Prinze, who joked, "We're vacation stalkers."

"I was eating with my kids, I had just put them down for bed. I was coming back to find Sarah by the pool, and she said ‘Hey, look who I found again,' because no matter where we go on vacation, David's always there. Literally," Prinze explained. "It doesn't matter where – we could go to Siberia, and he'd be like, ‘Yeah, I like hockey, and I heard they had good hockey in Siberia.'

I'm not even sure what to make of that comment, I assume he's mostly joking? It would be a funny little coincidence if they all bumped into one another one time, but David unexpectedly being there everytime they go on vacation should maybe be a point of concern to Freddie :P Somehow picturing David always popping up and waving at them wherever they go in the world is making me laugh so hard though

not for his demographic? W. THE. F.

People from 16 to 60 watched it. I watched it with my husband and another couple. What an ass.

I know! He's married to the woman who played Buffy, yet he's talking about it in total ignorance like it was solely aimed at a female demo! Or does he maybe mean a teenage demo, I'm not even sure what he's trying to say
Abbeythegrlwhowaited on March 11th, 2014 02:59 am (UTC)
That's ridiculous. Not in his demographic.

Pfft exactly, people of all ages from all over the world are Buffy fans!

I know. It seems so stupid to say that.

He could at least watch a few episodes before speaking with authority on it absolutely not being aimed at him! I mean if I argued that Breaking Bad isn't aimed at my demographic because I'm not a middled-aged man in the midst of a midlife crisis, or The Sopranoes isn't for me because I can't relate to a criminal, then I would have missed out on some great shows
Abbeythegrlwhowaited on March 12th, 2014 06:11 pm (UTC)
Right. I get what your saying. Or Bones because I'm not an forensic anthropologist or something.

You gotta do better than that. You gotta watch more than one episode.

Flop.

Heh yep, I can't believe that Sarah never educated him on what a great show he was missing out on!

idk - I can kind of understand why he would or wouldn't watch it. I've heard actors say they don't like to watch their own stuff and maybe he doesn't want to watch it alone? idk.

Totally weird that David is always there though and funny :p

IMO, there are a thousand legitimate reasons for why he might not have watched it. That it wasn't for 'his demographic' is not one of them!!

He could have said so many other things here, instead he chose an option that I think is actually super insulting, both to his wife and to the gazillions of people who DID watch and love it.

PFFT, FPJ, PFFFFFT TO YOU.
Naomi: Buffy sharing power by nonewstepsfrelling_tralk on March 11th, 2014 11:22 am (UTC)
Yeah if I were Sarah then I would actually be pretty upset at him dismissing my work like that. Like okay extreme examples, but you don't see Breaking Bad or Mad Men being dismissed as only being for a particularl demo! Yet he obviously feels free to do that with Buffy, even though it was clearly critically acclaimed by way more than just teenage viewers or young girls. There are serious studious books for this show out there, there are courses for studying this show at some university's, you'd think that he would at least have awareness of that

Yeah, I agree completely. It's such a backhanded dismissal, like he's saying "well, I wasn't a teenage girl so why would I have watched it?? As if people who weren't teenage girls ever watched it, let alone liked it."

It not only shows his disinterest in her most definitive work (which I see as insulting to Sarah) but also his complete lack of comprehension about its general significance/reach (which I see as ignorance, particularly when he's also in the same industry!).

I mean, he could easily have said something like, "while I know that it was a hugely popular series, the supernatural genre isn't something I was into at the time/have never been into, and so I never watched it".

THERE ARE SO MANY OTHER ANSWERS! The fact that he went with this one (given how terrible it is) probably means it's the truth. Which is... revealing. And disappointing.
Naomi: Buffy Fear Itself by organzafrelling_tralk on March 11th, 2014 01:06 pm (UTC)
Exactly! Saying something like 'it's not my genre' would be about his own taste which is fair enough, but saying that 'it wasn't written for my demographic' makes it sound like he still has a lot of preconceived ideas abut who the show was being written for

he still has a lot of preconceived ideas abut who the show was being written for not to mention, the possibility of preconcieved ideas about who should like what in general...
Infinitewhaleinfinitewhale on March 15th, 2014 10:02 am (UTC)

There were producers that spouted similar crap. Angel was more mature! How? Uh...

Naomi: Anya bunny by bel-perdentefrelling_tralk on March 15th, 2014 10:35 am (UTC)
Yeah I don't see how you can argue that after seasons 5-7 of Buffy! If anything Angel always seemed like more of a comic book fantasy to me tbh with Angel able to make a living out of saving lives, while on Bts they mocked that idea when Anya suggested it
Naomi: Buffybot by letsy-xfrelling_tralk on March 11th, 2014 11:23 am (UTC)
I could understand it just not being his thing, the way he puts it though makes it sound like he avoided it because he assumed that a show with a female lead wouldn't be aimed at him :(
hamarakissa: Btvs - Buffy & Faith // Who Are Youhamarakissa on March 11th, 2014 06:29 pm (UTC)
Yeah true - it does seem like that's how he mentioned it. Which is dumb. idk - being that it's his wife, he should watch it; just as I'm sure she's watched the things he's been in.
Naomi: Spuffy Wrecked by awmpfrelling_tralk on March 12th, 2014 11:44 am (UTC)
Yeah if Sarah has sat through some of his terrible films, then I'm sure that he could catch a few episodes of a critically adored show like Buffy :P

LoL! Right! Freddie definitely had some REALLY bad movies :x BtVS is just AMAZING and to not watch it because of some lame demographics bs; he's an idiot :x

Is he stupid or something? XD Basically he's dismissing her wife's best work with a patethic excuse. Wtf? XD
Naomi: Spuffy Wrecked by awmpfrelling_tralk on March 11th, 2014 11:26 am (UTC)
Yeah Buffy is something that she's very famous for, so it's odd to hear him be so dismissive about it. If watching the whole thing doesn't appeal him then that's cool, but you'd think that he would be interested in at least checking out a few episodes to see his wife playing her most famous part
Infinitewhaleinfinitewhale on March 11th, 2014 01:59 pm (UTC)

Eh, I think him not watching was probably a bonus for her. :P No worries about some dude trying to play out some fantasy. As stupid as the excuse is, he's probably right that he wouldn't like it. By the time they started dating it was S4-S5 when the 20-something comic guys were running from the show en masse.

Still, you'd think he'd have seen it. It's been 10 years.

As for the DB thing, I think that's true actually, though he's probably overstating things. It's not the first time I've seen it. SMG mentioned it a few years ago. I don't know if it's that weird. They have the same vacation period and I sort of doubt there are that many trustable places to go to.
Naomi: Buffy and Kendra by thememoryslidesfrelling_tralk on March 11th, 2014 02:10 pm (UTC)
I agree that it doesn't seem like Freddie's kind of show, but urgh just the way he put it by stating as a fact that it wasn't aimed at his demographic seems really dismissive of the show and the work that his wife put into it, it reminds me of the emmy voters never getting it a fair chance because it automatically didn't get the same respect as non-genre shows with male leads

And heh I guess it makes more sense if they go to the same places a lot, it just sounds so weird to say that David is literally always popping up whenever we go anywhere
Lisashipperx on March 11th, 2014 02:04 pm (UTC)
If you didn't watch, how can you have a (valid) opinion of the Triangle of Doom?
Naomi: Spike/Dru Crush dance by massive_dosefrelling_tralk on March 11th, 2014 02:13 pm (UTC)
Because Angel is totally tougher and the bigger dude duh :P

(He's probably right that he wouldn't have enjoyed Buffy)
Owenowenthurman on March 12th, 2014 09:36 am (UTC)
Wow. I guess I shouldn't have started watching as a married man in my thirties. But nobody told me I wasn't supposed to.

I just have to say that if he's publicly trashing his wife's biggest professional star achievement like that and hopes to come home tonight, he'd better be better looking in person that on screen.
Naomi: Buffy Triangle by sparkz0rfrelling_tralk on March 12th, 2014 11:46 am (UTC)
Yeah I'm wondering how Sarah took that because she's talked in the past a little bit about the Emmys snobbery and dismissal of the show, so in her place I wouldn't be that impressed for my husband to also be shrugging it off as I would never watch a show like Buffy because it's not aimed at my demographic
(Anonymous) on March 14th, 2014 10:09 pm (UTC)
I can see one up-side, though...
... no need to sit with your husband through something like "Smashed" or "Gone". I could see that being a tad awkward...

Re: I can see one up-side, though...
Heh, true!
apeygirlapeygirl on March 18th, 2014 04:49 am (UTC)
Maybe she didn't want him to watch it. I know I did this one indie film and I did not want my family to see it as I just didn't see it as something they'd enjoy. I cut a few scenes of mine together and sent them to them.

But yeah. I'm disappointed he never watched. As far as SMJ goes, nothing else she's done has the same oomph as Buffy, IMO.
Naomifrelling_tralk on March 18th, 2014 11:12 am (UTC)
Yeah it seems a shame that he hasn't watched at least a few of the episodes that Sarah is proudest of, even if he isn't inclined to sit down and watch the whole thing.
